John Shumate, Resident Counselor

Resident Counselor

John's postgraduate studies of strategic family therapy were conducted under the auspices of the Family Therapy Institute of Washington DC, cofounded by Jay Haley and Cloe Madanes. He worked with and was supervised by professionals trained by both of these noted psychotherapists.

As a counselor and social worker for both foster families and birth families, John has counseled toddlers, tweens, teens and adults. He has also worked with children suffering from severe emotional disturbances in a therapeutic day school setting.

His work can best be described as solution-focused, with clients quickly reaching their therapeutic goals. He especially welcomes people who are seeking creative, expressive solutions to their problems.

M.Ed., QMHP

John strives to assist people in fulfilling the positive potential planned for them by God. He knows that some people just want to talk, laugh – maybe even cry and believes each of us has equal access to solutions that can solve our problems.

He understands that spirituality is a powerful component of the therapeutic process, and that problems often include great spiritual pain and personal struggle. We often must listen to our heart, sometimes even to its brokenness, for the solution to our suffering.

John has also served as a deacon in his local church and has been involved with media arts for a number of years, often assisting his home church in the preparation of audiovisual materials.

John agrees with noted positive psychologist Martin Seligman who believes we can be far happier than we are and that life can be more meaningful, engaging, and hopeful. We can express our joy, even in the face of adversity, through a strong spiritual connection with Jesus and his transformative power.

Finding happiness may include discovering ways in which we can overcome our perceived limitations, but it may also include forgiving others for their offenses, or even making amends for our own transgressions. John believes we were created uniquely for God and that we have a distinct capacity and choice to reflect the goodness of his creation. This includes our utilization of God-given talents and strengths in seeking, and obtaining, the happiness planned for us by Jesus.
